Zarina was not born. She was summoned by the wind.

Mid-twenties, from the vast open lands surrounding Almaty — a city where the modern world ends abruptly and something far older, far wilder and far more powerful begins. Out here on the Kazakh steppe, the horizon stretches further than ambition and the sky is bigger than anything a city dweller could imagine. Zarina grew up knowing all of this intimately. It shaped her entirely.

Photographed on the endless golden steppe at dramatic dusk, the wheat-colored grasslands burning amber under a brooding stormy sky, Zarina stands against the wind with the absolute stillness of someone who has never once felt the need to move for anything. Her long dark hair whips wildly around her face — she doesn’t notice. Her magnificent traditional Kazakh robe of aged leather, silk and intricate silver embroidery wraps around her like armor forged from centuries of ancestral pride. Those massive ornate silver disc earrings frame her face like a crown her grandmother’s grandmother once wore.

Her eyes — warm, dark, ancient — look into the camera with an expression that predates photography itself. That predates everything, actually.

The steppe is eternal. So is Zarina.
