Selam, the Ethiopian Empress, Ethiopia

Selam doesn’t enter a room. She reigns over it.

Mid-twenties, born in Addis Ababa — the ancient capital of one of the oldest civilizations on earth. A city that was never colonized, never broken, never anything less than entirely itself. Selam carries that undefeated spirit in every fiber of her being — and it radiates from her like heat from the African sun.

Photographed in a sleek studio that somehow transforms into a royal court the moment she steps into it, Selam turns her bare shoulder toward the camera with the unhurried grace of a woman who has never once needed to prove anything to anyone. Her jet black hair swept into a magnificent sculptural updo that adds inches to an already commanding presence. Deep burgundy lips sealed with quiet authority. Golden eye shadow burning like embers against her flawless warm ebony skin. A traditional Ethiopian ceremonial dress in rich crimson and gold draped across her body like a flag of pure heritage. Multi-strand gold beaded necklace cascading across her bare shoulder like liquid treasure. One gold chandelier earring catching the studio light like a crown jewel.

She glances back over her shoulder directly into the camera. One look. That is all it takes.

Ethiopia gave the world coffee, ancient scripture and the cradle of humanity itself. Then it gave us Selam. And somehow that still feels like its greatest gift.
